五月五日               Boy’s Day Celebrations (5 May)

In Japan, families with boys fly carp streamers outside of their house while inside they put samurai dolls or helmets on display to celebrate Boy’s Day.  These items are viewed as symbols of strength, vitality and success, seen as sought-after characteristics in children as they grow and mature.

Pictured here in Japanese class, students are working on carp shaped streamers, koinobori, and samurai helmets, kabuto, as part of Boy’s Day celebrations.
